Bicyclists need a bike dog carrier that’s compact, easy to carry, and easy to handle, according to a new survey.
It’s not just the bike itself that’s important.
The carrier’s design also plays a role in its comfort, said Dr. Paul M. Wojcik, associate professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“A dog carrier with a good bike carrier design will reduce the likelihood of accidents,” said Wojcic.
Wozcik and colleagues analyzed more than 1,000 bicycle owners who used a bicycle-mounted dog carrier for a total of 6,600 days.
The survey, conducted in October 2016, was based on the Bicycle Safety Foundation’s Bike Carrier Survey.
The study is the first to compare dog carriers to standard bicycle carriers, the study authors said.
For the study, the researchers asked participants to select a bicycle carrier from among six different designs: a bicycle frame, a bicycle handlebar, a bike handlebar mounted on a bicycle axle, a handlebar on the bicycle frame with a bicycle saddle, and a handlebars mounted on bicycle frames with or without a bicycle chain.
The results revealed that, when compared to standard bicycles, bicycle dog carriers were more likely to be used for a short distance (10-20 meters), a bike frame with saddle attachment, and bike handlebars.
In the end, the dog carriers with a handle bar were more effective than the dog carrier without a handle on bicycle handles, with the dog’s weight saving on the bike frame and its saddle saving on handlebars, the authors wrote.
The dog carriers also provided a smaller footprint than standard bicycle carrier, and they provided a better mobility experience for dog owners.
“When compared to other bicycle carriers,” said Dr Wojccic, “these dog carriers are more compact, and the bike carriers are lighter and more durable, which make them more attractive for use by bicycle owners.”
Wojcek also pointed out that dog carriers for bicycles were more convenient for dog people than standard bicycles for dog and other pets.
They could be used to transport dogs, and their weight savings and the fact that they are designed to be carried on bicycles, meant they would be used less often by dogs, compared to a standard bicycle, Wojchic said.
Another important factor to consider when choosing a bicycle bike carrier is how the carrier fits inside the bike, the design of the bike handle bars, the bike saddle, or the bike wheel.
Wjccic said it’s important to choose an appropriate bike carrier that fits inside your bicycle frame.
“It’s best to choose bicycle dog or bicycle dog accessories that are as comfortable as possible,” he said.
He also suggested that dogs can use bicycle dog racks for a bicycle rack.
For dogs, Wozcic recommends dogs use dog carriers that are at least as large as bicycle handlebars (25 centimeters or 40 inches), so that they don’t weigh more than about 8 kilograms (16 pounds).
The dog carrier also should have the widest available saddle to accommodate the dog.
“The more space between the dog and the handlebars of the bicycle carrier,” Wojczic said, “the more comfortable and stable the dog will be.”
Wozczic also suggested a dog carrier design that’s compatible with bicycles with handlebars that have no space between them.
For example, a dog should use a bicycle seat with a small, wide saddle to hold a dog, he said, and use a standard dog carrier to carry a dog.
A dog should also not use a dog chain as a dog-carrying device.
A chain that fits under the dog handlebars would be a good idea, but dogs shouldn’t use a chain to carry their dog.
Another good thing about dog carriers is that they’re easy to store and take up little space in your bicycle’s frame.
The bicycle frame can be mounted on any type of bicycle carrier.
Wodzieck said dogs who are able to handle the bicycle’s handlebars and wheels will be able to ride on the carrier with ease.
For dog owners who want to make the dog a part of their daily routine, Wodczic recommends a dog harness, which will make sure the dog can walk on the handle bars of the carrier without straining on the saddle.
“There are some dog carriers, such as a bicycle harness, that are better for dog handling,” said John J. Gaskin, professor of animal behavior and training and director of the veterinary clinic at the Emory University College of Veterinary Medicine.
“They are easier to use and carry, so you can make the leash easier to tie around the dog, so the dog won’t have to strain on it.”
